Astronomers Discover White Dwarf With Unprecedentedly Strong Magnetic Field
A new study has revealed a unique white dwarf star with a surprisingly strong magnetic field. A white dwarf is a small, dense star at the end of its life cycle, and is typically about the size of Earth. However, this particular white dwarf, known as SDSS J121209.31+013627.7, has a magnetic field that is 200 million times stronger than Earth’s magnetic field! This is the second strongest magnetic field ever recorded for a white dwarf. The star’s unusual magnetic field could shed light on the physics of the stars, including how they evolve and what their final fate might be.
