Recently, scientists have made a major breakthrough in understanding how to treat inherited neurodegenerative diseases. A team of researchers from the University of Cambridge have developed a method which uses cells to ‘digest’ abnormal proteins which lead to diseases such as Huntington’s, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. This method, known as ‘in-cell digestion’, uses a natural process within cells to break down the abnormal proteins and clear them away. This could potentially be a game-changer for the treatment of these diseases, as it could help to slow down or even prevent the progression of the diseases.
