In the US, election season is beginning to heat up and politicians are using culture war tactics to attract voters. A recent report from the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) has revealed that in the last decade, state legislatures have introduced over 500 bills that target the teaching of specific topics in public schools. These bills are intended to shape the education of students to align with a particular ideology, often times in favor of conservative values. This practice has been dubbed ‘culture war legislation’ due to its divisive nature. The ACLU report found that these bills range from forcing schools to teach about the founding fathers to teaching students about the “sanctity of life.” While many of these bills do not become law, the fact that they are even being proposed is indicative of an increasingly polarized society. It remains to be seen which cultural values will be imposed on the future generations of Americans.
