Using Social Media to Track the Phenomenon of Cherry Blossom Images
In Japan, the annual blooming of the cherry blossom is a beloved tradition that marks the start of spring. It is celebrated across the country with festivals, picnics, and hanami (flower viewing). Now, researchers at the University of Tokyo have developed a new technique that uses social media to track the spread of cherry blossoms from south to north in Japan. By analyzing millions of images of cherry blossoms posted to social media, they can measure the timing and intensity of the blossoming and predict when it will arrive in different parts of the country. The results of their study will help to improve predictions of the blooming of cherry blossoms, as well as other seasonal changes that can be affected by climate change.
