The lasting impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on our education system was made clear this week when new research revealed that school scores have not recovered since the start of the pandemic. The research, conducted by the education nonprofit Achieve, focused on comparing the academic progress of students in 2020-21 to that of students in the same grades from 2019-20. The results showed that, despite the best efforts of teachers and administrators, students’ scores in reading and math fell behind, with the biggest drops seen among low-income students and students of color. This research serves as a stark reminder that the pandemic has had a profound impact on our students, and that more must be done to ensure that all students have the resources they need to succeed.
