A new report from the University of Birmingham has found that the average life expectancy in the UK is now 85 years for men and 88 years for women - but that the rate of increase in extreme longevity is growing faster. The report calls on the government to invest in research and policy to better understand and manage the challenges posed by this growing population. It proposes that initiatives such as improved access to health care and financial security, as well as greater public awareness of the risks posed by extreme longevity, could help to reduce the burden on society caused by this increasingly large and growing population.
