A new imaging technique developed by researchers at the University of Manchester is allowing scientists to measure gene expression in worms in real time. By using a combination of fluorescent dyes and a special light source, researchers are able to capture the rhythms of gene activity in worms with unprecedented accuracy. The scientists then use this data to identify and investigate the molecular pathways that are involved in the worms’ circadian rhythms. This technique could eventually help us better understand how the environment affects gene expression in all organisms, and even how our own genes interact with our environment.
