Unlocking the Secrets of Hydrogen at Ultra-High Pressures
Hydrogen is a colorless, odorless gas and the most abundant element in the universe, making up 75% of all matter. Hydrogen can exist in various forms or states, such as a gas, liquid and solid, and its properties are determined by the pressure and temperature that it is subjected to. Scientists have recently made a breakthrough in understanding the behavior of hydrogen at ultra-high pressures.
In a recent study, researchers from the University of Geneva and the Paul Scherrer Institute have conducted a comprehensive characterization of hydrogen at ultra-high pressures, up to 1.8 million atmospheres (Mbar). The team made use of an advanced X-ray technique to measure the properties of hydrogen at these extreme conditions. Their findings provide important new insights into the behavior of hydrogen, and could have far-reaching implications for future energy technologies.
