Using New Telescopes to Capture the First Image of M87's Supermassive Black Hole
Astronomers have today released the first image of a supermassive black hole, taken by three of the world’s most powerful telescopes. The image shows the supermassive black hole at the center of the Messier 87 galaxy, located 55 million light-years from Earth. This is the first time a black hole has been imaged directly, and it marks a major breakthrough in our understanding of the universe. The image shows a bright ring of light surrounding a dark center, representing the event horizon of the black hole. The image was created using data from the Event Horizon Telescope, a global network of radio telescopes. The resolution of the image is extraordinary, showing details as small as 20 micro-arcseconds. This is equivalent to being able to spot a golf ball on the moon from Earth.
