Achieving Sustainable and Efficient Synthesis of Hyaluronic Acid: New Breakthrough
Researchers from the Netherlands have developed a new and sustainable route for the synthesis of hyaluronic acid (HA). The new method is more efficient and cost-effective than traditional methods, making it a promising avenue for creating new types of HA-based materials. HA is a naturally occurring polysaccharide found in the body that plays a role in tissue repair and wound healing. It is also used in a range of pharmaceutical and cosmetic products, such as creams, lotions, and injections. However, current production methods involve costly and environmentally harmful processes. The new synthesis route developed by the researchers is based on fermentation and uses a modified version of the bacterium Escherichia coli, which is known for its ability to produce HA.
