Japanese Surgeon-Scientist to Lead Astronauts on Mission to Space in 2023
The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) is making history with their new Surgeon-Scientist program by sending its first physician-astronaut to space in 2023. Dr. Norishige Kanai, a former Navy doctor, is set to become the first surgeon-scientist to join JAXA’s astronaut crew and is expected to launch from the International Space Station in the coming years. According to JAXA, Dr. Kanai’s mission will be to study the effects of long-term space travel on the human body. He will also be conducting experiments on microgravity, human organ development, and disease prevention. This marks an incredibly exciting milestone in the field of space exploration and medical research.
