A recent archaeological discovery has shed new light on one of the world’s most iconic monuments: the Great Sphinx of Giza. Discovered by a team of French archaeologists, the findings suggest that the structure was built much earlier than previously thought. Tests on the limestone blocks that make up the structure date it to the 4th millennium BC, over 5,000 years ago. This is over twice as old as previously assumed, and predates the Egyptian civilization by several centuries. It is now believed that the Sphinx is the oldest known monumental sculpture, and is even older than the Great Pyramid of Giza.
