ITU to Strengthen Regulations on Satellites in Earth's Orbit
In a major step towards protecting our planet from the ever-growing number of satellites in orbit, the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) is set to introduce new regulations to tighten the rules for registering and launching satellites. This is a necessary step to ensure our planet’s precious environment isn’t negatively affected by the growing amount of space debris. The regulations are expected to come into effect in October 2023 and will require all satellite operators to provide information on the size, mass, orbit, and trajectory of their satellites. This will allow the ITU to better track and monitor the activities of satellites and ensure that they are not interfering with other satellites, or creating hazardous debris. It is expected that this will help reduce the amount of space debris that is created, and ultimately help protect our planet.
