How Young Students are Developing a Deeper Understanding of Civics
In recent years, there has been a shift towards more engagement in civics by young students. A new study by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine has found that engaging in meaningful civic activities can foster a deeper understanding of civic life and the importance of civic engagement. This study surveyed over 2,000 high school students, who reported that engaging in activities such as voting, attending public meetings, and participating in community service were among the most impactful activities that shaped their understanding of civic life. The students reported that these activities helped them to gain a better understanding of the complexity of civic issues, as well as their own roles in the larger community. The study concluded that the more meaningful the activity, the more beneficial it was for the students’ understanding of civics.
