A new study published in the journal Nature Communications has revealed some fascinating clues about the way whales and dolphins use echolocation for navigation. Researchers from the University of St Andrews used a unique analysis of recordings of echolocation calls from finless porpoises (Neophocaena phocaenoides) to understand how the animals use sound to make their way around the ocean. The results of the study suggest that echolocation might play an even more important role in navigation than previously thought, and might provide a vital link to the animals’ environment. The study also provides some insight into the way that different species of whales and dolphins use echolocation in different ways.
