Scientists have recently developed a new strategy for green synthesis of 15N-labelled amino acids. In an article published in the journal Nature Communications, the team of researchers from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Tsinghua University describe an effective and cost-efficient strategy for producing 15N-labelled amino acids, enabling new opportunities for research and industrial applications.

The new strategy is based on the use of nitrogenase, an enzyme found in some bacteria, for the direct conversion of 15N-labelled ammonia into 15N-labelled amino acids. By using the enzyme, the researchers were able to effectively synthesize 15N-labelled amino acids in a single step, without the need for additional reagents or solvents. The team also demonstrated that the nitrogenase-catalyzed reaction can be scaled up for industrial production, making it a viable option for researchers and industrial applications.
