The future of education is uncertain, but one thing is certain: the rising number of students coming out of an already-stressed school system is creating a new wave of educational inequality. A recent study from the University of California, Berkeley has found that school districts across the country are seeing a surge in pupils due to demographic shifts and the effects of the pandemic. This surge is creating a gap between schools that are overwhelmed and those that are able to adequately support their students. As a result, students in high-poverty, high-minority districts are at risk of falling further behind their peers in affluent districts due to a lack of resources.
