Saturday Night is the New Coal Filthy with Microplastics
This Saturday, November 23rd, a team of marine scientists from around the world released a report citing microplastics and coal as some of the filthiest substances polluting our oceans. The study focused on seven major waterways around the globe – the Mediterranean Sea, the Black Sea, the Red Sea, the Bay of Bengal, the South China Sea, the East China Sea, and the Yellow Sea – and the results were alarming. The report showed that microplastics accounted for 90% of the debris found in these oceans, while coal and other carbon-based materials accounted for 8%. The authors of the report concluded that this type of pollution is having a devastating effect on the marine ecosystem, and that urgent action must be taken to protect our oceans from further damage.
