Russia is making plans to launch a robotic mission to the Moon in 2023, which will mark the first time a Russian probe has been sent to the Moon since the 1970s. The mission, known as Luna-25, will be launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan and is intended to explore the Moon’s south pole. Luna-25 will carry a variety of instruments to study the lunar surface, including cameras, spectrometers, and radiation detectors, as well as a drill to take samples from the lunar regolith. The probe is also equipped with a laser altimeter to measure the height of the lunar surface, as well as an X-ray spectrometer to map the chemical composition of the lunar soil. The mission is set to last for two years, during which time Luna-25 will collect data on the lunar environment and help scientists better understand the history of the Moon.
