It’s official: worms can generate electricity. Scientists have recently discovered that the common earthworm is capable of producing electricity, making them the first known living organism to do so. Earthworms are capable of producing up to 1 volt of current, with larger worms producing more electricity than smaller worms. The electricity that is generated by earthworms appears to be generated by the sodium and potassium ions that are found in their cells. This discovery is particularly exciting because it could open the door to a variety of new applications and technologies, including new methods of energy production. Who knows what we’ll discover next!
