New Standards for Chemicals in Firefighting Foams to Take Effect in 2023
It’s estimated that firefighting foams containing toxic chemicals have been used to put out fires at military bases, airports, and other sites around the world for decades. Now, researchers are working to create new firefighting foams that are free of these harmful substances, while still providing the same level of fire protection.
Researchers at the University of Massachusetts Lowell are leading the way in developing new, environmentally friendly firefighting foams that meet the highest fire safety standards. The team has developed a foam that is free of the harmful perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) found in traditional firefighting foams. This foam uses an innovative combination of natural and synthetic surfactants that are both safe and effective in fighting fires. The new foam has already been tested in laboratory settings and has been proven to be as effective as traditional firefighting foams in suppressing fires.
