Insects are essential to the health of the global environment, and a new study has revealed unprecedented insight into their genetic diversity. Researchers from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, in collaboration with scientists from the Smithsonian Institution, studied the mitochondrial genetic diversity of insects from around the world. By combining data from over 10,000 insect specimens, they were able to identify patterns in the genetic diversity of the species, and better understand how species are distributed globally. This study is the first of its kind and provides valuable insight into the future of global insect conservation.
