Witness the Mysterious Phenomenon of Red Sprites in Space!
In a recent study, scientists have discovered that mysterious flashes of red light known as “red sprites” could be more common in space than previously thought. Red sprites are short-lived, large-scale electrical discharges that occur above thunderstorms and can reach up to 60 miles high. They are rarely seen from the ground, only appearing in a fraction of lightning storms.
Now, using satellite data, researchers have spotted more than 600 red sprites above storm clouds during the course of the study. This is far more than the number of sprites that could be seen from the ground. The study suggests that red sprites may be more common than we originally thought, and may be an important part of our understanding of lightning storms and the atmosphere.
