A record-breaking team of citizen scientists have set a new record for the number of species identified in a single day. Last week, a group of more than 2,000 volunteers, organized by the international conservation organization WildTeam, identified 1,200 species of plants, animals, and fungi. This is the highest number ever recorded in a single day of biological recording. Led by WildTeam’s Chief Scientist Dr. Mireya Mayor, the team of citizen scientists collected data from nearly 50 sites across the world, including rainforests, deserts, national parks, and urban areas. This incredible feat highlights the importance of citizen science and the potential of citizen science to help conserve global biodiversity.
