The Urgent Need to Address the Huge Gender Gap Among Published Authors
In a study conducted by researchers at the University of Colorado Boulder, it was found that people of color are still largely underrepresented in the authors of books published in the United States. Despite the fact that people of color make up about 40% of the population in the US, only 13% of authors of books published in 2020 were from these communities. This is an alarming statistic, especially considering the great wealth of knowledge and stories that these voices can provide. We need to work towards ensuring that all voices are given a platform to share their stories and experiences, and this research clearly shows that we still have a long way to go.
