Unlocking the Secrets of the Complex Magnetic Fields of Molecular Clouds
New research has revealed a previously unknown complex magnetic field structure in a molecular cloud. Using data from the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), an international team of astronomers has discovered a new structure of the magnetic field of a star-forming molecular cloud, which is composed of a series of twisted and curved filaments. This is the first time such a complex structure has been observed in a molecular cloud. The discovery provides new insight into the evolution of the interstellar medium, and the mechanisms of star formation.
