Chinese astronomers have just made an exciting new discovery - they’ve spotted a tidal disruption event! This event occurs when a star passes too close to a supermassive black hole, and its gravity causes the star to get torn apart. The resulting debris is then blasted out into space, and the powerful radiation from this event can be seen from Earth. This is the first tidal disruption event to be observed in China, and it’s an amazing accomplishment for Chinese astronomy. It’s a great example of how far we’ve come in understanding the universe around us.
