Today, scientists have determined the age of Saturn and its rings with a high degree of accuracy. By measuring the rate of a certain type of meteorite bombardment, researchers have been able to determine that Saturn and its rings are only about 4.4 billion years old–much younger than scientists previously thought. This means that Saturn and its rings have only been around for about one-third of the age of the solar system. This discovery helps us better understand the formation of our solar system and the solar nebula from which it was formed.
