Today, astronomers have released the first ever image of a newly-forming planet, which reveals never-before-seen details about how planets are born. This image, taken by the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) in Chile, shows a protoplanetary disc surrounding a young star in the Serpens Nebula, about 1250 light-years away. The image shows a ring of dust and gas that forms the disc, with a bright spot in the center that is believed to be the planet in the process of formation. The bright spot is likely caused by the gravitational pull of the planet on the dust and gas, compressing it and making it appear brighter. The disc itself is about the size of our own Solar System, with the bright spot being about the size of Neptune. This is an exciting discovery, as it provides insight into the mysterious process of planet formation.
