On July 3, 2023, a rare celestial event will take place: for the first time in nearly a century, a type of binary star system known as an eclipsing cataclysmic variable (CVs) will be visible with the naked eye. CVs are binary star systems composed of a white dwarf star and a companion star, which orbits the white dwarf. During the eclipse, the companion star passes in front of the white dwarf, temporarily obscuring the white dwarf’s light and causing the star system to appear much dimmer. This eclipse will be especially spectacular, as the eclipse will be visible in the night sky for over three hours, and will even be visible to the naked eye in parts of the Northern Hemisphere. This is a unique opportunity to witness a rare event, so be sure to mark your calendars and take in the view!
