NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) has recently discovered a new crater on the surface of the Moon, the result of an impact that occurred just last year. The crater, named Luna, is located in the northern hemisphere of the Moon and is estimated to be about 11 meters in diameter. Scientists believe it was created by an impactor that was less than a meter in size and travelling at a speed of over 6.2 miles per second. While this is not the first impact crater observed on the Moon, it is the first to be observed and confirmed in such detail during its formation. This opens up exciting and unprecedented possibilities in terms of learning more about the impact process and how small objects interact with planetary surfaces.
