On May 8th, 2023, NASA is launching a mission to better understand how ice clouds affect Earth’s dynamic climate. With the mission, named Ice, Cloud, and Land Elevation Satellite-2 (ICESat-2), scientists will receive more precise data on how ice is changing around the world. This data is crucial for understanding the effects of climate change and will provide valuable insight for making decisions that will affect our environment for years to come. ICESat-2 will measure the height of Earth’s polar ice sheets, glaciers, sea ice, and vegetation over a three-year period. This data will help us to understand how ice is changing due to climate change and how this will affect weather patterns and global sea levels. Additionally, ICESat-2 will help scientists to measure the changes in forest resources, such as changes in tree height, canopy structure, and the spread of invasive species. By gaining a better understanding of the effects of climate change on our world, we will be able to make more informed decisions and take measures to protect our planet for future generations.
