NASA is set to launch an exciting new mission to the Moon in 2023: the Lunar Flashlight mission. This mission will use cutting-edge technology to search for water and other resources on the Moon’s surface, helping to pave the way for future human exploration. The mission will be equipped with a solar-powered, “flashlight-like” instrument that will enable scientists to detect water and other materials in dark, permanently shadowed regions of the Moon. This instrument, known as the Lunar Flashlight, will be mounted on NASA’s Volatiles Investigating Polar Exploration Rover, or VIPER, and will be powered by a 12-volt battery. The VIPER will also be equipped with a drill to collect samples that could further enhance our knowledge of the Moon’s resources. With the Lunar Flashlight mission, NASA is taking a major step towards understanding the Moon’s environment and resources and preparing for future human exploration.
