The Benefits of Lost Space: Open Plan Classrooms for Children
The long-held belief that open plan classrooms are the best option for children’s learning may be about to be challenged. A recent study conducted by researchers at the University of Queensland has found that children in open plan classrooms are more likely to suffer from a lack of focus and attention, compared to those in traditional classrooms. The study examined the impact of open plan classrooms on children’s academic performance, cognitive development, and behaviour. The results showed that compared to those in traditional classrooms, children in open plan classrooms had lower academic performance, poorer cognitive development, and more disruptive behaviour. The study concluded that open plan classrooms may not be the best option for learning, and that traditional classrooms should be considered when designing learning spaces for children.
