In a recent press release, the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) has announced an outbreak of invasive fruit flies in Florida and Georgia. This is the first time an invasive species of fruit fly has been detected in either state. The USDA is working with state and local agencies to contain the outbreak and prevent further spread of this pest. The USDA is asking residents of both states to avoid transporting or trading fruits and vegetables that may have been infested with the fruit flies. In addition, the USDA is warning of the threat this species of fruit fly poses to the production and commercialization of fruit and vegetables in both states.
