A new study has found that over the past three decades, the abundance of insects worldwide has declined by more than 25%, and this decline is accelerating. The researchers, who analyzed 73 long-term studies of insect populations from around the world, attributed the decline primarily to human activities such as the destruction of habitats, climate change, and the use of pesticides. This decline is a serious concern, as insects provide vital services to humans, such as pollinating crops, providing food for birds and other animals, and decomposing organic matter. The loss of these insects could have a devastating effect on ecosystems and food security, particularly in areas where food supplies are already limited.
