Natto, a traditional Japanese food made from fermented soybeans, has been associated with a range of health benefits, from improved digestion to better cardiovascular health. Now, researchers have discovered that natto may also be beneficial for longevity and stress tolerance. In a study published in the journal Aging, researchers from the University of Tokyo found that natto consumption increases the expression of genes associated with longevity and stress tolerance in the nematode C. elegans. The researchers observed that consuming natto increased the expression of genes associated with stress tolerance, including one that helps protect against oxidative stress. In addition, the researchers also observed that natto consumption increased the expression of genes involved in longevity pathways, such as those associated with autophagy, or the process by which cells remove damaged or unnecessary components.
