A new study conducted by researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has uncovered a link between a mitochondrial metabolite and inflammation in a variety of diseases. The study suggests that a small molecule called aconitase 2 could play an important role in the development of many diseases associated with inflammation, including Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and inflammatory bowel disease. The team found that aconitase 2 acts as an “on-off switch” that controls the production of several inflammatory molecules in the body. The findings could lead to new ways of treating these diseases.
