In a recent study published in the journal Applied Optics, scientists have shown that holographic microscopy has the potential to be used in the detection of harmful algal blooms, specifically red tides. Red tides are caused by an over abundance of certain species of algae and can cause serious ecological and health problems. With holographic microscopy, scientists are now able to quickly and accurately identify the species of algae responsible for a red tide, as well as the concentrations of the algae. This can help scientists better understand the effects of red tides, as well as better predict and prevent them from occurring.
