Unveiling the Sexism Faced by Women Scientists Worldwide: Results of a Global Survey
A new survey of women scientists from around the world has revealed that the majority of them have experienced some form of sexual harassment in their careers. The survey, conducted by the Association for Women in Science (AWIS), included responses from nearly 1,500 women scientists and engineers. The results show that 59% of the women surveyed had experienced some form of sexual harassment in their professional lives, with 40% of those women having experienced unwanted physical contact. Additionally, nearly one-third of the women surveyed reported they had been the target of sexual coercion, and almost one quarter reported that they had been the target of unwanted sexual advances.
The results of the survey are a stark reminder of the prevalence of sexual harassment in the scientific community, and how much work still needs to be done in order to create an equitable and safe workplace for women scientists. AWIS and other organizations are working to create a culture of respect and inclusion for women in science, and this survey is just one more step in the right direction.
