Construction Begins on World's Largest Telescope Mirror: Comprised of Over 800 Segments
The world’s largest telescope mirror is set to become even larger! It will be made up of 12 segments, giving it an unprecedented power that will allow us to observe the universe in greater detail than ever before. This new telescope is being developed by the European Southern Observatory (ESO). It is known as the European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT) and will be the largest optical-infrared telescope ever built. The mirror will measure 39 meters in diameter, making it the world’s largest telescope mirror. This mirror will enable the E-ELT to observe objects that are up to 100 million times fainter than can be seen with the naked eye. It will also provide the resolution necessary to study planets around other stars, and the first galaxies that formed in the universe. This new telescope is sure to revolutionize our understanding of the universe.
