How Elephant Teeth Evolved to Cope with Climate Change
In a new study, scientists have discovered that the teeth of elephants have evolved over time to help them better cope with changing climate conditions. The study, published in the journal Nature Communications, utilized CT scans to analyze the teeth of modern and ancient African elephants. The results showed that the shape of the teeth had changed over time, becoming more slender and curved in the modern elephants. This adaptation allowed them to better cope with the increasingly drier conditions in Africa. The findings of this study increase our understanding of how animals are able to adapt to changing climates, and could help inform conservation efforts.
