10 Year Adult Periodical Cicadas Set to Emerge in 2023
It’s been nearly 17 years since the last emergence of adult periodical cicadas - and now, the wait is almost over! In 2023, periodical cicadas from Brood X are expected to emerge, covering much of the eastern United States. This is an exciting event for scientists and citizens alike, as Brood X is one of the largest and most widely distributed broods of periodical cicadas. It is estimated that 1.5 million cicadas per acre will emerge from the ground and fill the air with their loud buzzing sound. With the emergence of Brood X periodical cicadas in 2023, scientists expect to gain a better understanding of these fascinating insects and the role they play in the environment.
