Scientists at the Mars Institute are developing a new type of autonomous drilling bot for use on the surface of Mars. This cylindrical robot, named the Martian Autonomous Drilling Bot (MAD Bot), is designed to autonomously drill up to three meters below the surface of Mars in search of underground water and other geological resources. The MAD Bot is equipped with a drill bit, multiple sensors, an on-board computer, and a communication system. It is also able to carry out multiple tasks, such as drilling, navigating, sensing, and communicating with the mission control team on Earth. The MAD Bot is expected to revolutionize our understanding of Mars and provide us with valuable data about the planet’s history and resources.
