Unprecedented View of Mars' Subsurface Revealed by Chinese Spacecraft
A recent study published in Nature Astronomy details the results of an imaging survey of the subsurface of Mars conducted by Chinese scientists. Using a radar instrument aboard China’s Mars orbiter, the scientists were able to map out an incredibly complex subsurface environment that contains regions of both high- and low-density material. This reveals an environment that is much more geologically active than previously thought, and provides an unprecedented opportunity to study the planet’s internal structure. The research also offers the potential to better understand the history of the Martian environment, including the past presence of water.
