Chemists Develop a New Class of Antibiotics to Combat Drug-Resistant Bacteria
Chemists have recently developed a new class of antibiotics that could be used to fight against drug-resistant bacteria. The new class of antibiotics, called protegrins, are made using peptides, which are short chains of amino acids. These peptides have been engineered to bind to the bacteria’s cell walls and interfere with the bacteria’s growth. So far, the protegrins have been tested against several strains of drug-resistant bacteria, including Staphylococcus aureus and Klebsiella pneumoniae, and have been found to be effective. This offers hope that the new antibiotics could help tackle the global problem of antibiotic resistance.
