Unveiling the Illuminated Sea Star: A Look at its Basic Toolkit
A new study published in the journal Current Biology has revealed that sea stars, or starfish, have a basic toolkit of behaviors that allow them to survive and thrive in the harsh ocean environment. By studying the behavior of sea stars in the wild and in aquariums, the researchers were able to identify five key behaviors that are essential for the animals’ survival. These behaviors include the ability to forage for food, the ability to navigate, the ability to hide from predators, the ability to find refuge from the environment, and the ability to reproduce. Studying these behaviors allowed the researchers to gain insight into how sea stars have adapted to their environment over time and how they are able to survive and thrive in the ocean.
