Today, astronomers have discovered a planet that shouldn’t exist according to current planetary formation theories. This exoplanet, located about 500 light-years from Earth, is roughly three times the size of Jupiter and orbits a binary star system with an orbital period of only 36 days. This is extremely short for a planet of this size, and the vast majority of exoplanets discovered so far have orbital periods that are much longer. This has led astronomers to believe that this planet may have formed in a way that is entirely different from existing models. The team of researchers is now working to understand how this planet formed and to better understand the conditions that allowed it to exist.
