Astronomers have recently discovered an unusual type of galaxy that has highly collimated jets of gas emanating from its center. This galaxy, dubbed “M63-2”, is estimated to be over 7 billion years old, and is the first of its kind to be observed in the universe. The jets of gas, which are the result of an active supermassive black hole at the galaxy’s center, travel for up to 1,000 light years in two opposite directions. This is an impressive feat, as it is much longer than jets seen in other galaxies. The jets are also incredibly narrow, with each jet only being between 0.1 and 0.2 light years wide. M63-2 is a truly remarkable galaxy, and its discovery will provide astronomers with an important insight into how galaxies form and evolve over time.
