Bringing Tokitae Home: The Last Journey of the Beloved Orca
Today marks a bittersweet moment for the Puget Sound orca community. Tokitae, the beloved 74-year-old matriarch of the Southern Resident Killer Whales, has passed away. Her death was announced by the Whale Museum in Friday Harbor, Washington, where Tokitae was remembered for her strength, wisdom, and courage.
Her ashes will be spread in the waters of the Salish Sea, her home for many years. This will be a special moment for the community, many of whom have been following and loving Tokitae since she was first seen in the 1970s.
The Whale Museum is asking anyone who would like to pay their respects to Tokitae to join them in a virtual ceremony this Wednesday, September 23rd. They will be streaming the ceremony live on their Facebook page and invite all to join in mourning the passing of this beloved orca.
